Guo Jingjing was born in Baoding, which is in Hebei province of the people republic of China to Guo Shu Zhong and Fan Yu Mei. Guo was very young when she started diving and soon joined the Baoding training base. When she was about the age of seven, her diving coach recognized her and guided her further on diving. In an interview, Guo says that when Coach Yu Fen asked the students about diving, she thought that he was talking about swimming lessons, so she raised her hand instantly. She says she didn’t know what diving meant at that time and did not even know about the Olympic Games until she got selected for one herself. Even when she realized that diving was not swimming; she decided to stick on to it as she loves to accept challenges. Since then, Guo used to train for ten hours a day which caused many health problems to her including damaging her waist, straining of her ankles and causing eyesight problems, not to forget these problems are common in professional divers.

In 1992, Guo was selected by China’s national diving team and competed at the Atlanta games in 1996. Even though she finished at fifth place, but it clearly showed the strength this 15-year-old had which she proved in the later years of her profession. Guo won a number of gold medals at world championships, summer Olympics, Asian Games and a number of other international sports events.

Guo got very famous after 2004 and got many contracts including MacDonald. The people of China call Guo “The princess of Diving”. There was a time when Guo started doing a lot of commercials, especially for cosmetic products and her beautiful pictures were all over the malls and billboards of China. Due to her excessive participation in brand promotions, it resulted in her in being banned by the national diving team, but later they allowed her again to join her team on the agreement that she will focus on diving more and commercial activities less. Guo lost about 4 million dollars for giving up on these promotional advertisements, etc.

In 2004 Olympics, Guo won a gold medal in 3 meters synchronized springboard alongside her diving partner, Wu Minxia. She is also tied with her fellow athlete for winning the most Olympic awards. After the Beijing games ended in 2008, Guo became one of the top female Olympic divers. Both she and her ex diving athlete teammate Fu Mingxia were on a tie.

In 2011, Guo finally decided to retire after almost two decades of professional diving all around the world. These years of her life were the most success keeping in mind the number of national and international medallions she won.
