In England, Fan Ho has won an award for Best film at Banbury International Film Festival. Three of Fan Ho’s films have received international acclamation. These films have been selected officially in several international film festivals such as the Berlin film festival, San Francisco film festival and Cannes film festival. Five of the films directed by Fan Ho have been accepted in the national film archives of Hong Kong and Taiwan as Permanent collection. Ho has been nominated as Taiwan golden horse film festival’s judge. He has also been selected as a judge in the Oscar Film award in Hong Kong. In 2015 the Chinese photographic society gave Fan Ho a lifetime achievement award.

Biography:

Fan Ho is a Chinese actor photographer and a film director who was born in 1973 in Shanghai. He later migrated to Hong Kong with his family at a very young age. Fan Ho was passionate about photography from a young age, so his father saw his passion for photography and bought him a Rolleiflex camera. Fan Ho’s photography focused on slums, urban life, streets, markets, explored alleys which showed his fascination for all these.

Through his photography, he also captured children playing in the streets and street vendors selling their products. He chronicled Hong Kong through his photography in its 50s and 60s. As at that time, Hong Kong started its journey to becoming the biggest metropolitan centre. Fan Ho has a unique style of photography which depicts his love for his culture and the common people of Hong Kong. His photography never captured buildings and skyscrapers; rather, he intended to capture the resilience, hardship, and soul of Hong Kong’s citizens.  

Fan Ho has also been invited to teach photography, art, and film making as a visiting professor in many universities of Hong Kong and Taiwan. Ho has also written five books. One book written by Fan Ho contains all the photos for which he received an award. These prints are displayed on the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Moreover, he is one of the biggest and most cherished film directors in Hong Kong.

Before he was even 28, he created the biggest magnum opus through his hard work and passion for photography. Fan Ho, through his skills and unique photography, made everyone notice his work and gained international fame. Through competing in the salons, Ho received 300 international and local titles and awards. He joined the film industry as a film actor, but later his talent for direction was also noticed by people. He then started working as a film director in the industry and took his retirement at the age of 65. 

Besides this, he is also an honorary fellow of many photographic societies of different countries such as Belgium, Singapore, Italy, Germany, Argentina, France, Singapore, and Brazil. In England, he is also a member of the Royal Society and photographic society of Arts.

In 2015 the Chinese photographic society gave Fan Ho lifetime achievement award. Chinese photographic society has given Ho this award in 2nd global Chinese international photography in Guangzhou China.

 Fan Ho’s work is still present in many public and private collections of museums around the world.
